Food-Grade Packaging Explained: What Makes Packaging Food-Safe?

What Is Food-Grade Packaging?

Food-grade packaging is made from materials that are certified safe for direct contact with food products. This means the packaging materials won’t leach chemicals, contaminate contents, or degrade in ways that affect product safety.

Materials That Make the Difference

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)

PET is the most widely used food-grade plastic. It’s transparent, strong, lightweight, and creates an excellent barrier against moisture and gases. All CaliPack Pro mylar bags use food-grade PET as the outer layer.

Aluminium Laminate

The inner aluminium layer provides three critical functions:

  • Light barrier — Blocks UV rays that degrade product quality
  • Moisture barrier — Prevents humidity from reaching contents
  • Odour barrier — Keeps contents smell-proof and prevents external odours from contaminating the product

Heat Seal + Zip Lock Closure

The dual closure system provides both initial tamper evidence (heat seal) and convenient resealability (zip lock). This maintains freshness throughout the product’s shelf life.

Who Needs Food-Grade Packaging?

If your product is consumed, applied to the body, or intended for close human contact, food-grade packaging is essential:

  • Coffee & tea brands — Freshness and flavour preservation
  • Supplement companies — Potency and purity protection
  • Confectionery makers — Food safety compliance
  • Spice & herb suppliers — Moisture and UV protection
  • Pet treat brands — Animal food safety standards
  • Cosmetic brands — Product integrity and hygiene

Certifications & Standards

CaliPack Pro packaging meets the following standards:

  • EU Food Contact Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 — Materials intended for food contact
  • FDA 21 CFR — US food contact material standards
  • Food-safe compliant — All materials tested for migration and safety

How to Verify Your Packaging Is Food-Grade

Always ask your supplier for:

  1. Material safety data sheets (MSDS)
  2. Food contact compliance certificates
  3. Migration test results
  4. Batch traceability documentation

At CaliPack Pro, we provide compliance documentation for all our food-grade products on request. Contact us for certificates.
